Shetland or more correctly the Shetland Islands are the most northern archipelago of islands within the United Kingdom. With the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the North Sea to the east Shetland has a somewhat changeable climate throughout the year.

Shetland exhibits some string ties to Scandinavian culture, making them a very interesting place to visit for the UK resident, a real contrast to traditional Scottish culture in many ways. Outdoor pursuits make up the largest chunk of tourists activities in Shetland, such as hiking and cycling, although fishing is also quite dominant as both a pastime and a local industry. Some of the beaches in Shetland especially those in Scalloway are truly incredible, perfect golden sands and calm waters. Scalloway Castle is located in the central mainland of Shetland, and overlooks the harbour of Scalloway. More of a fortified house than an actual castle this is a well preserve site, visitors can explore medieval kitchens and a banquet hall.
